April 19, 2011

Start Time: 7:07 pm

Attendance: 48

EVENTS AND DEADLINES

  • NWA Conference Reimbursement: For those who paid AMS for the NWA conference, email Nick your summer address if you want to get reimbursed.
  • NWA Meeting: Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 pm at Godfathers in Ankeny. Details under President material.
  • Going Away Party for Carl Jacobson: Friday, April 22nd at 3:30 pm in 257 Science I.
  • Spring Picnic: Saturday, April 23rd at noon at Moore Memorial Park.

President

  • Spring Fury/VEISHEA Update: As most of you know, it was very cold during this event, but everything that was in our control went very well. Thanks for those who helped out!
  • NWA Meeting: It will take 20-30 minutes to get down there, so we’ll leave from the Agronomy parking lot at 6:15 pm.

Vice President

  • Spring Clothing Orders: The design was approved and put on a white background. Orders were due the 20th at 3:00 pm.
  • ISU AMS Window Clings: Still available at the amazing price of $5.00 a piece -- don’t wait till it’s too late!
  • Spring Fury: Pete spent $48.00 on several items relating to Spring Fury during VEISHEA. A motion was submitted to reimburse him the full amount, and it passed.

Treasurer

  • Current Balance: Right around $4,000.00
  • Intramural Fees: $5 for broomball. Remember, when you sign up you MUST participate. AMS loses money otherwise.
  • Student/Faculty Dinner: To reimburse the faculty the full $81, a vote to do so was successful.

    Secretary

  • Keep reading to get to “this month in weather history!”

Social Chair

  • Spring Picnic: If you can go to this, please help out by bringing items such as chips, pop, salads, or deserts. Also, if you did not do so at the meeting, email Tyler the amount of burgers and/or brats you would like.
  • Broomball Games: Both were forfeited due to a lack of participation despite enough people signing up beforehand. This cannot happen routinely in the future, or at all as it is a complete waste of time and money.

Outreach Chair

  • Edward Elementary 4th Graders: Only two people are signed up for this event, so if you’re free this Friday or Thursday from 2:30 to 3:15 pm, let Kristy know ASAP at outreach.isuams@iastate.edu.
  • Summer Outreach Events: For those of you who plan on staying at ISU over the summer and are interested in helping out with outreach events, contact Kristy.
  • 2012 Calendar Voting: Ends at midnight on the 20th. 2012’s top 13 shots will be decided by the end of the week.

Academic Chair

  • Ask questions on the AMS Forums!
  • Poster Judging: Posters have been coming in from different schools, so for those on the committee, watch out for an email sometime soon.

Forecasting

  • WxChallenge Tournament: Results will be sent out by Saturday.
  • Iowa Forecasting Contest: Current cities are Burlington and Fairfield, IA. There will be one more period during Dead Week, and also 5 periods during the summer, so keep forecasting for those involved. If you’d like to join, it’s free!

Webmaster

  • Sign up for the forums at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/forums/.
  • Donations for Japan: Due to the poor weather and lack of attendance, only $12.00 was collected in the donation box during Spring Fury. Since the club has plenty of money and donated $250.00 last year for the other disaster, a motion was submitted to donate $250.00 once again. It passed.

    Historian

  • Picture of the Month: Contestants include Rachael at Cy’s Eyes, Science Night with Sam Santeiu and Josh, NWA conference with Rob and Josh, Pam Dale Scholarship with Kristy, and Stash the Trash. The winner was Stash the Trash!
  • Scrapbook: Has been completed and looks great. As many pages still exist, it may be added onto in future years.
  • Reimburse Expenses: A total of $67.00 was spent over the course of the year for developing photos and buying supplies. A motion to pay this amount in full passed.
  • Check out the board for new pictures for the last time.
  • YEAR IN REVIEW SLIDESHOW: Great year everyone!

Past President

  • Thank You Card: To Bruce Jones and Bruce Thomas as they donated a dozen weather radios to the club.
  • Weather Radio Programming Event: This will take place over the summer, but for those who are around ISU, programming is really easy and only takes a minute to explain how to do it. If available and interested, contact Rachel at rah@iastate.edu.

Cy’s Eyes

  • Senior Show: Took place on April 20th. Good luck for those nominated!
  • Thanks for all the participants this past year!

Sophomore Chair

  • Ultimate Frisbee: Was planned for this Thursday, but due to the rainy conditions and muddy field, decided to have it take place during the Spring Picnic instead.

Weather History for April: 04/03/1974 -- A "Super-Outbreak" of tornadoes ravaged the Midwest and the eastern U.S. Severe weather erupted early in the afternoon and continued through the next day. Severe thunderstorms spawned 148 tornadoes from Alabama to Michigan, most of which occurred between 1 PM (CST) on the 3rd and 1 AM on the 4th. The tornadoes killed 315 persons, injured 5300 others, and caused 600 million dollars damage. Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio were especially hard hit in the tornado outbreak. One tornado destroyed half of the town of Xenia OH killing 34 persons. Another tornado, near the town of Stamping Ground KY, produced a path of destruction a record five miles in width. A tornado raced through Guin AL at a speed of 75 mph. Two powerful tornadoes roared across northern Alabama during the early evening hours, killing fifty persons and injuring 500 others.

Great year everyone and congratulations to the new, 2011-2012 Cabinet
