Why should you join the local or national chapters of the AMS? Find out the benefits below!
Local BenefitsTaking the Road Less Traveled is a middle school and high school career conference sponsored by the Program for Women in Science and Engineering at Iowa State University. The event takes place three times in October and April Each Year. Since before 2004, the Iowa State AMS Chapter has been helping out with the conference, putting on "Hands-On Weather Explorations." Chapter members assist the middle school and high school students in making baby food jar barometers and dixie cup anemometers. The students learn about the Bernoulli effect, what it takes to become a forecaster, and touch a tornado generated by the chapter's own tornado machine.
Throughout the night, chapter members answer questions about what it takes to be a meteorologist. Members answer based on their own experiences in the field and emphasize that it takes hard work and dedication to science to become a meteorologist.
