PRESENTATION: Paths Taken by Meteorology Students

By Elise and Chris Shultz

Main points discussed involved the path they took and many options for current students as well as many tips. The presentation is attached for further details, but here are some points to be taken away:

  • Try to figure out a general direction you want to go, but leave all options open. For example, even if you’re not interested in broadcast, give Cy’s Eyes a try.
  • It’s never too early to start looking forward.
  • Understand and identify your weaknesses within the field, as they may come back to haunt you if you don’t address them early on. Example is radar information – not really taught in-depth at ISU.
  • Network, network, network! Join the National NWA, get involved with LinkedIn, have business cards available, etc.
  • Expand your horizons by volunteering for projects outside your comfort zone.

President

  • Spring Fury/VEISHEA Sign-up: We will not be sharing a tent with LAS this year, instead it’s our own. Members of the NWS, Brad Edwards, relief effort groups such as the Red Cross and others will be there with us as well. Like usual, we’ll be hosting a Jeopardy game, face painting, selling calendars, showcasing our scrapbook, etc. If interested in helping out, contact JoBeth at pres.isuams@iastate.edu.
  • Spring Fury Reimbursement: For the down payment of the tent, JoBeth put down $1500.00 of her own money. Although she would get reimbursed in 90 days, this is a really long wait. Instead, the club voted to pay her the $1500.00 back since our balance is $4400.00.

Vice President

  • Spring Break Trip Reimbursement: We had a great and very educational time in Denver and Boulder. We visited NCAR, the Space Weather Prediction Center, the NWS office in Boulder, and many other locations. Also, we went hiking on several occasions, once on Sugarloaf Mountain which was breathtaking. Several photos were shown at the meeting. *For past trips, AMS has reimbursed for gas and other expenses up to $300.00. Considering all the driving we did, the club viewed this as a reasonable estimate and voted to spend the same for this trip.
  • Spring Clothing Orders: No new ideas have been submitted yet. If this continues to be the case, the old t-shirt design involving a polar bear will probably be selected. An email will be sent out when a decision has been made on the design so we can begin ordering.
  • ISU AMS Window Clings - $5.00: You only have a couple weeks left to purchase one! You won’t be disappointed with the purchase, as they last for years.

Treasurer

  • Current Balance: $4400.00
  • Coed broomball dues are $5.00 per person for those interested. Pay up front if at all possible.
  • Alumni Luncheon: Even if you’re not attending the NWA conference, you can still come. The cost is $5.00 plus the registration sheet which can be handed in to Nick.

    Secretary

  • Keep reading to get to “this month in weather history!”
  • To help make meetings more lively, music will be played beforehand. Enjoy!

Social Chair

  • Intramurals: Coed broomball (fee of $5.00 required) and coed volleyball (free) are coming up very soon. Get your money to Nick.
  • Spring Picnic: This is the last major event of the year. More details will be provided at the next meeting. *Note: it has been made known that this event will take place over Easter break, but not much can be done to avoid that issue.

Outreach Chair

  • VEISHEA Service Day/Stash the Trash: Those involved will meet at Agronomy at noon to gather/check for the forms and waivers needed for the event, and then head to Reiman Gardens for check-in. Lunch will be provided.
  • Gilbert, Sawyer, Edward, and Roland-Story Kids Club Outreach Events: Very few volunteers currently for all these events, so if you’re interested or have questions about what would be involved with volunteering, let Kristy know at outreach.isuams@iastate.edu.
  • Calendar Committee Meeting: Watch for an email/doodle poll to be sent out soon. At this meeting, the goal is to split the photos into seasons and narrow them down from 75 to around 25.
  • Sell Calendars!: The price is now only $8.00. Also, we’ll sell them at the NWA conference and donate half of the proceeds to relief efforts involving Japan.

Academic Chair

  • Ask questions on the AMS Forums!
  • Chat on the Chasing Forums: This feature allows users to chat while on a chase, or before if seeking information. To access, go to the AMS website, go to ISU Chasing chat client. The username is “isuchase”, and the password is “tornado.” Next you’ll have to type in your name, and login again using the same username/password. This is a great tool!
  • Poster Contest Committee: Posters from schools will begin flowing in soon, so a committee is needed. An email regarding details will be sent out. This is always a fun time, so come and help judge!

Forecasting

  • Iowa Forecasting Contest Update: Current city is Estherville, and the following two weeks will be for Des Moines. Congratulations to Jeff Duda who has won the past three periods. Jeff is also the overall leader followed by the average and then Andrew Ansorge. As usual, registration is still open and free.
  • ISD Forecast Update: Everything’s going great!
  • KSUX Results: Can be found at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ralliss/wxchallenge/ .
  • WxChallenge Update: Elko, NV is the current city, but next week we’ll be forecasting for Boston, MA. Also, the national tournament will involve Oklahoma City, OK for those who qualify. Another tournament for anyone at ISU who’s interested will be held as well. Please watch for an email from Kristy.

Webmaster

  • Sign up for the forums at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/forums/.
  • Interesting Website Tidbit – ISU AMS Photo Gallery: Go to the website, then member resources, and then to photo albums to see many photos from the spring break trip to Boulder/Denver, CO.

    Historian

  • Picture of the Month: Contestants include a science night photo, the Jeopardy event, two of Sugarloaf Mountain, NCAR, Denver public library, Estes Park, and the Coors brewery. The top two voted were the library and brewery photos!
  • Send event photos to Anthony at historian.isuams@iastate.edu or upload at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/Photos or on our Facebook Page.
  • Scrapbook Committee: As VEISHEA is fast approaching, work needs to be done on the scrapbook. A committee has been formed, but anyone else who’s willing to help out should contact Anthony at historian.isuams@iastate.edu.
  • Check out the board for new pictures!

Past President

  • No new information

Cy’s Eyes

  • Need More Participants!: Cy’s Eyes has had a 3 person show for the last few times, which is the bare minimum and is very difficult to pull off. If you want to give this a try, there are still 4 or 5 weeks left of show. It’s a very beneficial and fun experience. Never too late to join!
  • Producer elections: These will be held after the AMS elections.
  • Tape swaps for Storm Conference: If you want to participate, talk to Rachael.
  • YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/CysEyesISU?featuer=mhum.

Sophomore Chair

  • Ultimate Frisbee: This was an overall success last time, as many people showed up and the weather was nice. We’ll look for a repeat this year – a doodle poll will be sent out soon to figure out the best time and date for people to attend.
  • Student Faculty Dinner: This event has always been a lot of fun – there will be plenty of room and great food this year. Many of the faculty are planning on attending as well. Further details will be provided via email.

Weather History for March: 03/01/1910 - The deadliest avalanche of record in the U.S. thundered down the mountains near Wellington Station WA sweeping three huge locomotive train engines and some passenger cars, snowbound on the grade leading to Stevens Pass, over the side and into a canyon, and burying them under tons of snow. The avalanche claimed the lives of more than 100 people. The station house at Wellington was also swept away.
