PRESENTATION: Broadcast Opportunities
By Rachael Witter, Tyler Roney, and Nick Krauel
These three have been involved with internships at WHAM 13, KCCI 8, and ABC 5. Activities involve
creating your own forecasts which may get some publicity and creating tapes for submission to future potential employees. If interested in
interning, all you have to do is send the chief meteorologist of one of these stations an email letting them know who you are, that you’re
from ISU and that you’d be interested in interning for them. Contact Rachael (rawitter@iastate.edu),
Tyler (social.isuams@iastate.edu), or Nick (academic.isuams@iastate.edu)
for further questions. *Remember, Cy’s Eyes was made to prepare you not only for this type of internship, but also for future jobs in
broadcast. It’s a unique experience, so check it out!
President
- Next NWA Meeting: NWA is a great way to meet professionals in the field and to network!
- Lunch with Rachel Riley: She was the vice president of our club when the current senior class
were freshmen and would be very interesting to talk to considering her graduate work at Oklahoma University and her current job at the
Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program/Oklahoma Climatological Survey. Contact JoBeth at
pres.isuams@iastate.edu if this works with your schedule and are interested.
- Science Fair Judging: This event will take place in Ames, so if you want more information or are
interested in helping out, contact JoBeth at
pres.isuams@iastate.edu.
- Survey Results: Some of the most important topics include: alternating meeting nights will not
occur due to a small minority in favor of the idea, people want more social events (this means you have to come to the events!), and the
meetings need to be a bit more lively/engaging. Ideas for social events? Contact Tyler or Nathan at
social.isuams@iastate.edu and
sophomore.isuams@iastate.edu respectively.
Vice President
- Spring Break Trip: Will take place in Boulder and Denver, Colorado. The trip will cost around
$200.00 per person for gas and hotels, meaning food and souvenirs are on your own. If still interested in going, time is running out!
Contact Pete at
vp.isuams@iastate.edu.
- NWA Storm Conference sign-up: Cost is $75.00 for students not members of the NWA, and $55.00 for
members of the NWA. Fun fact: This is the second largest conference put on by the NWA, the largest being the national conference. Two to
three hundred people will be in attendance, so this is a GREAT way to network. Make sure to consider joining the NWA as well, as there are
many benefits.
- ISU AMS Window Clings: $5.00 as usual. They are “really beautiful and cool” and may even produce
good luck for storm chasing.
Treasurer
- Current Balance: $3,400.00 minus the cost for the subs at tonight’s meeting.
- GR Workshop: At the NWA conference, there will be a radar conference – you get to act the part
of the National Weather Service meteorologist by issuing the warnings for severe storms that develop. If you don’t know much about GR or
how to use it and would like an introduction to it, show up to this workshop.
- Keep reading to get to “this month in weather history!”
- To help make meetings more lively, music will be played beforehand. Enjoy!
Social Chair
- Intramurals: Coed broomball (fee of $5.00 required) and coed volleyball (free) are coming up.
Contact Tyler if interested so he can sign you up at
social.isuams@iastate.edu.
- ISU Home Hockey Game: Discount tickets to a home game are available. Also, Dave Flory and his
daughter will be in attendance! Departure times and further details will be sent out via email.
- Ski Trip: Due to the recent weather, this is not looking likely.
Outreach Chair
- Science Night: Will take place at Fellows Elementary. If you’ve signed up for this, information
regarding details will arrive via email soon.
- Gilbert Elementary Science Night: Monday, April 4th from 6-8 pm (set up at 5:00 pm).
Contact Kristy if interested in helping out at
outreach.isuams@iastate.edu.
- VEISHEA Service Day: This is a great way to do some community service! Shifts for helping out
will be hourly. If interested, contact Kristy at
ourtreach.isuams@iastate.edu and more details will be provided.
- Sell Calendars!: New price is set at $8.00.
- Calendar Committee Meeting: For those involved, watch for an email. The meeting will occur next
week at some point.
Academic Chair
- Ask questions on the AMS Forums: Congrats 301 class! Great usage of the forums recently.
- Fill out forms for this semester’s classes.
Forecasting
- WxChallenge Update: First period winner is Ethan Milius! Complete results can be found at
http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ralliss/wxchallenge/. Richmond, VA is the current
location. We had horribly large amounts of missed forecasts in the first period, so make sure to remember. If you can’t, let Kristy know
and she’ll send you reminder emails.
- Iowa Forecasting Contest: Most recent period winners were Andrew Ansorge and Jeff Duda. The
average continues to lead the cumulative standings. This week’s city is Clinton. As always, if interested, you can join any time and it’s
free!
- ISD Forecast Update: Everything’s going great!
Webmaster
- Battery Recycling Competition Update: Awards ceremony will take place in the Campanile room in
the MU. Our club totaled with around 600 + lbs of batteries. An email with more details on this event will be sent out soon.
- Picture of the Month: The four options this time included Rob and Nick C. playing Monopoly,
Steph with Reed Timmer in Seattle, several members at Clubfest II, and snow football. The winners were Monopoly and Clubfest II!
- Send event photos to Anthony at
historian.isuams@iastate.edu or upload at
http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/Photos or on our Facebook Page.
Past President
Cy’s Eyes
- Dues -- $10.00 per participant: ISU TV requires Cy’s Eyes to pay a total of $100.00 for the
average of 10 people that are associated with the show each time. After discussion about what we’ve done in the past and options for this
year, it was motioned and past that the ISU AMS should pay the whole bill.
- Need More Participants!: A few freshman went on air last week and did a great job, so there’s no
excuse for other members of that class not to join, too. It’s a great opportunity!
- YouTube page:
http://www.youtube.com/user/CysEyesISU?featuer=mhum.
Sophomore Chair
- AMS Jeopardy!: This event will utilize PowerPoint to display questions and clickers to answer
them. If you don’t have a clicker, come anyway as we’ll probably split into groups. An email and Facebook message will go out soon
regarding further details.
End Time: 7:46 pm
Weather History for February: 02/27/1717. What was
perhaps the greatest snow in New England history commenced on this date. During a ten day period a series of four snowstorms dumped three
feet of snow upon Boston, and the city was snowbound for two weeks. Up to six feet of snow was reported farther to the north, and drifts
covered many one story homes.
