PRESENTATION:
University of Michigan Space Physics Research Lab REU
By Robert
Nelson
Rob partook in this internship
over the summer of 2010 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There, he met grad students
from all across the world and worked on a project dealing with mercury
deposition. Of interest was the different, if any, types of convective
patterns that existed with high deposition events. The results were
then presented to faculty and other students at the university.
The deadline to apply is March
1st. While juniors and seniors are preferred, all are welcome
to apply. For additional details, see the attached PowerPoint or contact
Rob.
President
- AMS Poster Cost:
In years past, our club has helped pay for the poster since it will
represent us at the Seattle conference in January. The cost is around
$35.00, and the club once again agreed to pay the cost of the AMS poster.
- Meteorology Poster
Session: All should come to observe the numerous posters from a number
of seniors and graduate students.
- Senior Research
Symposium: There are many presentations going on this year covering
a wide range of topics. A list of times and topics will be sent out
via email so feel free to stop by at any time (except while a presentation
is taking place… wait until it’s over to enter please). Juniors
should especially consider dropping by since you’ll be a senior in
one year’s time.
Vice President
- Fall Clothing Orders:
All but two orders have been picked up. This was a big success -- thanks
to all who ordered!
- Spring Break Trip
Committee: Only three people signed up last meeting. Remember, signing
up does not mean you have to attend the trip. Being on the committee
means sharing thoughts on where to go, what to do, how long to go, etc.
If interested, contact Pete at vp.isuams@iastate.edu.
- Clubfest II: An
email will be sent out after break with more information once people
know their schedules.
- NWA Severe Storms
and Doppler Radar Conference: This is a great event to attend since
professionals from every area of the field will be there. Normally we
stay at the hotel, but this is not required especially since Ankeny
is so close. The cost is $75.00 for non-NWA members and $50.00 for members.
A percentage of the cost will be reimbursed by LAS.
- ISU AMS Window Clings:
On sale for only $5! This is a great stocking stuffer!
Treasurer
- Current Balance:
Approximately just under $3000.00.
- Intramural Dues:
Pay $5.00 for broomball and $3.00 for curling. Drop money off in the
2101 mailbox or to Nick Carletta. Remember, when using checks, write
down what it’s for. When using cash, place in an envelope with an
attached note addressing what the money is for and who it’s from.
- Giving Tree Donation:
Last year the club donated $50.00 to help support a family during Christmas
time. The club voted to donate $55.00 this year for the cause.
- Conference Travel
Cost: Last year the club provided $50.00 per person for airfare. This
year we have three student assistances instead of two, but the club
voted to give $50.00 for each student once again since they are representing
our club at the meeting.
- Keep reading to
get to “this month in weather history!”
Social Chair
- Christmas Movie
Night: “Bring Christmas cookies and wear ugly sweaters” to
this event. A few surprise movies will be provided, but feel free to
bring your own as well!
Outreach
Chair
- Sell calendars even
though the contest is over!
- Award for most calendars
sold goes to…. Anthony and Ryan Lueck for the third year in a row!
They sold 26 and were presented a Walmart gift card.
- A sign-up sheet
was sent out for those interested in being on the committee for the
2012 calendar. If interested, contact Kristy at outreach.isuams@iastate.edu.
- Please send weather
photos to Kristy for the 2012 calendar at any time.
Academic
Chair
- Send your review
leaders the dates of your final exams so they can prepare sessions.
- AMS Forums: Big
part of the forums is for you to ask questions. This great tool has
hardly been used this year at all. It’s very easy to use once you’re
registered, and Nick is personally on the forums around 3 to 4 days
of the week, so any questions you have should be answered rather quickly.
Forecasting
- WxChallenge Update:
Visit http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ralliss/wxchallenge/ and also the club website to find
results. Overall, we’ve stayed in the top 20 overall. If interested
in joining, do so this spring.
- Iowa Forecasting
Contest: Location is Davenport and snowfall has been a new challenge
to forecast. The “average” is leading the contest currently. Come
spring semester, remember that the first period of forecasting occurs
before classes begin. For more information, go the club website and
follow the link. Also, signing up is absolutely free.
- ISD Forecast Update:
Things are going well, but next semester groups will be switched up.
Feel free to join then if you’re not already involved.
Webmaster
- Sign up for the
forums! http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/forums/. Post questions there as well –
can be very helpful. Email Rob at webmaster.isuams@iastate.edu for questions regarding how to register.
- Interesting Website
Tidbit: Internship page. Go to the club web page, click on member resources,
then careers, and finally “research experience for undergrads.”
You’ll find a list of REU opportunities, so apply this winter break
if you’re looking to get an internship for the summer.
- Additional Tidbit:
With regards to the snowfall contest, you can look into the future via
the model animator by visiting the club website, clicking on member
resources, and then model animator. Username: amsstudent; password:
isuams.
- Send event photos
to Anthony at historian.isuams@iastate.edu or upload at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/Photos or on our Facebook Page. Of particular
interest, the golf outing.
- Picture of the
Month: 6 photos were presented and 2 were to be selected for the AMS
poster going to Seattle. Options: photo from girls’ broomball event,
corn maze, outreach event, Halloween meeting, the AMS student chapter
party, and the video game night. Winners: Corn maze and girls’ broomball
photos!
- New pictures posted
on the board outside 3128 – check them out!
Past President
- Hy-Vee bags: Working
on sending the template to Hy-Vee. Take a look at the email sent out
about how our club was recognized for doing this event. This will also
be posted on the website.
Cy’s Eyes
- YouTube page: To
view, go to http://www.youtube.com/user/CysEyesISU?feature=mhum.
- Show during “dead
week” will not happen since people want to focus exclusively on finals
during that time. Therefore, the last episode of the semester took place
on December 1st.
Sophomore
Chair
- Winterfest Dodgeball
Event: A sign-up sheet and email was sent out, so if interested in participating,
let Nathan know. Keep in mind that others outside of the club are welcome
to join in this event.
- Weather Jeopardy
with clickers will take place early next semester.
End Time: 7:36 pm
Weather History for
November: 11/09/1996 - The Veteran's Day storm of November
9-14, 1996 may be the most severe early season lake effect snow storm
the Great Lakes has witnessed in the past fifty years. At the height
of the storm, over 160,000 customers were without power in Greater Cleveland
alone, as the storm produced isolated snowfall tallies approaching 70".
Next Meeting:
Tuesday, January 18th at 7:00pm.
A survey will
be provided on what day and time works best for club members to have
meeting next semester.
Good luck
on finals!
