President
- Resume Workshop:
Will be scheduled for next semester.
- Self Defense Seminar:
Dates were provided for when such an event could take place, but not
enough interest existed in the club to pursue the event at this time.
- NWA Meeting: Will
be held at the National Weather Service in Des Moines. Information regarding
rides will be sent out soon – keep an eye on your email.
Vice President
- Spring Break Trip:
After last year’s great trip to Norman, OK and Galveston, TX, it’s
time to start planning for this year’s trip. A sign-up sheet was sent
around for those interested on being on the committee. Being on the
committee doesn’t mean you have to go on the trip, only that you’d
be willing to help plan for it. Those interested should contact Pete
at vp.isuams@iastate.edu.
- Field Trip to Offutt
Air Force Base: As proposed by our past Air Force speaker, a trip will
be planned to the Air Force Base just outside of Omaha, NE at some point
next semester. Since this would be a 6 hour round trip, we’d plan
on devoting an entire Saturday for it.
- New Weather Station:
Dave risked it all to put up the new weather station this past week.
To show our appreciation of his efforts and time, the club has decided
to present him a $25 gift certificate to Applebees. Thanks Dave! Check
out this new weather station’s output in the map room.
- ISU AMS Window Clings
on sale for only $5!
Treasurer
- Dues: Should students
graduating this semester have to pay the full $10.00 membership dues?
The club voted on this matter and decided that, for that group of students,
only $5.00 would be required. As far as intramural dues go, it’s pretty
simple – if you won’t pay your dues, AMS won’t keep offering intramurals.
Drop money off in the 2101 mailbox or right to Nick C.
- When using checks,
make sure to write down what it’s for. Also, if you drop off cash
to the AMS mailbox (room 2101) please write on the envelope or have
an attached note addressing what the money is for and who it’s from.
- Current Balance:
The club has a few thousand dollars with LAS and GSB funds yet to be
added. We’ll be in good shape especially once calendar sales begin
to ramp up. Sell calendars!
- Senior Posters:
The club voted to continue the tradition of funding half the costs of
the senior posters.
- Keep reading to
get to “this month in weather history!” Hint: An event from October,
2010 is featured.
Social Chair
- Video Game Night:
Everyone is encouraged to bring gaming system and games for this event.
This has been a very fun and popular event in the past – more
information regarding timing and location of the event will arrive soon
via email.
Outreach
Chair
- Science Explorations
Camp Talk: Several people have already signed up, but more volunteers
are welcome. We’ll be displaying Virtual Storm, will talk about weather,
along with some other activities for 3rd
– 5th grade girls. Email Kristy at outreach.isuams@iastate.edu if interested in volunteering your
time.
- Sell Calendars!:
You have all Thanksgiving break to sell to your relatives and friends
back home. There will be a prize for the top seller.
- AMS Website: 2011
calendar and link to order forms is there.
- Please send any
weather photos of the flood, summer storms, and anything in between
to Kristy at outreach.isuams@iastate.edu.
Academic
Chair
- Class list: Turn
into Nick at academic.isuams@iastate.edu. Once you’re added, go online and
see who’s in your classes.
- AMS Forums: Big
part of the forums is for you to ask questions. This great tool has
hardly been used this year at all. It’s very easy to use once you’re
registered, and Nick is personally on the forums around 3 to 4 days
of the week, so any questions you have should be answered rather quickly.
- List of Electives:
If you’re taking or have taken any interesting electives, send Nick
information regarding which class it was (number and short description).
This way they can be added on the site for other students looking to
take an elective.
- Tornado Simulator
Tour: Not too many people showed up for the tour due to conflicts, so
another one is in the works for next semester for those who missed this
great opportunity the first time around.
Forecasting
- WxChallenge Update:
Results can be found at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ralliss/wxchallenge/admin/uploads/brownsville10.pdf: Nathan Gogo was #1 at ISU for the
first period while the team ranked 22nd (top half). For the
second period, Zachary Mangin came in first and the team moved into
19th place. Good job, and keep forecasting!
- Forecasting Discussions:
Attendance is dwindling to near zero, so they may be discontinued this
semester while starting back up again next semester.
- Iowa Forecasting
Contest: Congrats to Sho Kawazoe for winning the last two cities! Current
city is Marshalltown, IA. Remember, you can sign up for this contest
at any time and it’s free.
- ISD Forecasting:
Watch for the Fun Fact, and keep an eye on the paper to see what you
or your fellow classmates put as a forecast.
Webmaster
- Send event photos
to Anthony at historian.isuams@iastate.edu or upload at http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/Photos or on our Facebook Page. Keep sending
photos!
- Picture of the Month:
First option: a group photo at the corn maze. Second option: Dave setting
up the new weather station. Third option: Club members in front of a
“foam vortex” at the tornado simulator. Winner is…..the tornado
simulator photo! Check out the board to see it!
- New Pictures posted
on the board outside 3128 – check them out!
- AMS Scrapbook: Any
ideas for improvement? Sign-up sheet for a committee on this was sent
out for those interested in helping put the scrapbook together, or just
in providing ideas. If you’re interested, contact Anthony at historian.isuams@iastate.edu.
Cy’s Eyes
Update
- 5-Day Week Video
Cast: This will be composed of clips from News Watch and Cy’s eyes,
so no new work will be required.
- YouTube page: To
view, go to http://www.youtube.com/user/CysEyesISU?feature=mhum.
- Tape Swap/Cy’s
Eyes Viewing Party: This would be very beneficial for anyone interested
in broadcast meteorology, as you can only become better at broadcasting
by attending. Not into broadcast meteorology? You’re still welcome
to stop by and provide ideas for improvement.
Sophomore
Chair
- Ultimate Frisbee:
Overall a great success! We had lots of fun and enjoyed a great turnout
in which, of course, the upperclassmen dominated the underclassmen.
- New Ideas?: Nathan
is brainstorming for new events, so help him out by sending him any
ideas you may have to sophomore.isuams@iastate.edu.
HALLOWEEN CONTEST
Contestants included a three
hole punch (from the office), Daphne and baby Scooby, Christmas, Hugh
Hefner, Gumby, and Nexus along with their commentator. After the first
round vote, Gumby and Daphne with baby Scooby remained. Winner, with
19 votes compared to 12, was Daphne with baby Scooby! Congratulations
JoBeth! JoBeth was awarded a gift certificate to Walmart.
End Time: 7:30 pm excluding
the Halloween contest, 7:35 including it.
Weather History for
October: 10/26/2010 – The lowest recorded pressure in mainland
United States history developed across Minnesota with a minimum central
pressure of 28.22 inches of mercury. This category 3 hurricane pressure
equivalent low produced winds greater than 50 mph across several Midwestern
states and a tornado outbreak across portions of the Ohio River Valley
and the South.
