*Past President Rachel Hatteberg informed the club that the club recently received a phone call
from the president of the national AMS who revealed that our club has been awarded chapter of the year for 2009-2010! To
receive such an award, a club must excel at (among other things) demonstrating professional development, participating in community outreach
events, and contributing to the national AMS. Last time our club received the award was back in 2005-2006. This is an outstanding
achievement!!!
*Closets Collide Information:
Jennifer Sonner: Closets collide is a new sustainable fashion group that started this past year and serves both the ISU campus and the Ames
community. Our club has been invited to collaborate with them on Oct. 23 in the Sun Room of the MU for a “clothing swap”. We’d have three
options:
1.) Set up a booth to promote our club at this clothing swap (couldn’t sell anything, but could put
up tornado machine, etc).
2.) Set up a workshop and join forces with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
3.) Set up our own workshop. We’d work with Jennifer or another art coordinator to incorporate
fashion sustainability with weather somehow.
We are about environment and they feel we’d be a good addition to what they do. They ask that a
decision either way should be made before October 8th. Those interested should contact JoBeth at
pres.isuams@iastate.edu.
President
- Resume Workshop: Scheduled date collided with the NWA meeting, so an email will be sent out
regarding an adjusted time and date.
- NWS Tour: For those interested in the National Weather Service, this is a great opportunity to
observe the inner working of the place. Those who are willing to drive should.
- NWA Meeting/Elections: Will take place in Ankeny, perhaps at Godfather’s Pizza.
- LAS Homecoming Event: This event will include a 45 minute presentation, the tornado machine, our
poster, and maybe a demonstration. Volunteers were already determined at the meeting.
- AMS Student Assistantship Program: This year’s program will take place in Seattle, WA, and only
four students max are allowed to attend per college. Tasks include working at actual meetings through electronics and having to switch
presentations, working the registration booth, etc. The meteorology department and AMS will likely assist with any expenses. Looks great
on a resume! For more information, visit
http://www.ametsoc.org/MEET/annual/studentassistantprogram.html.
Vice President
- Fall Clothing Orders: Had around 50 orders prior to the meeting. The clothes will arrive in
approximately 2 weeks, but an email will be sent out announcing exactly when they arrive.
- Snowfall Contest: When will Ames receive their first official one inch snowfall of the year?
Pick your date by signing up on the AMS calendar in room 3008. Put down your name on a single date, one person per date and one guess per
person. Winner will receive a gift certificate.
- Severe Weather Talk: Ryan Alliss and Andy Mair will discuss forecasting, how severe storms work,
GR tutorial, and storm chasing the “right” way.
- ISU AMS Window Clings on sale for only $5.00!
