http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/
April 21, 2009
President Schwedler called
the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. He welcomed all who were present
to the meeting. This was the final ISU AMS meeting of the 2008-2009
school year, and officer nominations were held at the end of the meeting.
President Schwedler
- The ISU AMS T-shirts
should be in by the middle of Dead Week next week (the week of 27 April,
2009). You can come and pick up your shirts at that time.
Mr. Schwedler will send out an email once the shirts arrive.
Vice President Deppe
- Mr. Deppe would
like to extend a special thank you to all of those who took time out
to help at the ISU AMS table during our recent VEISHEA celebration.
Things went very well.
- For the Senior class
members only: there will be a Senior breakfast to be held on Saturday,
9 May, 2009, the day of the graduation ceremony, at 10:00 AM in 3140
Agronomy Hall. Please bring your parents, significant other, family,
friends, etc. Come and mingle with friends as a class for the
last time.
Treasurer Karsten
- Mr. Karsten sent
out reimbursement forms for the Central Iowa National Weather Association
Severe Storms and Doppler Radar Conference. Those were handed
out to those that signed up for the conference through the ISU AMS.
The reimbursement checks will be sent out to the summer home address.
- Mr. Karsten also
mentioned our progress regarding StormReady. We got an e-mail
from Dave Bunker of the Department of Residence, and Mr. Karsten.s
report was passed through the department. We are still waiting
to hear back from Dave Bunker on the next step for our StormReady initiative.
- Our new weather
station has finally arrived, and it is currently in Mr. Flory.s office.
We are expecting it to be up and running later this spring or early
summer.
- For those people
that still owe broomball dues or still wish to purchase window clings,
there is still time. Be sure to pay for these items! You
can give your money to Mr. Karsten, or pay to the ISU AMS mailbox in
Agronomy 3010.
- Our current balance
is $3,350 dollars. This doesn.t account for spring apparel,
or the purchase of the new calendars that will be occurring soon.
Social Chair Hoffman
- Intramurals have
gone very well this year. We are very proud of our meteorology
sports teams. Great job, everyone!
- This weekend, we
will be holding our annual Spring Picnic. It is to be held on
Sunday, 26 April at 5 PM at Moore Memorial Park, which is just north
of campus. A map to the park is located on the meeting agenda.
Sign up to bring treats, and also let us know what kind of food preferences
you have (what kind of meat you.d like to eat). It.ll be a
great time for all!
Academic Chair Prentice
- There were nearly
200 posters to go through for the recent poster contest judging, and
we decided on the winners for the poster contest. The winners
and the honorable mentions were shown to the chapter. Winners
got a free weather radio, window clings, calendar, and a nice certificate
of achievement. Congratulations to all of the winners and the
honorable mentions!
- Final exam review
sessions: please contact your section leaders if you are in need
of a review session. Please ask questions and study hard!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact Jayson
Prentice at academic.isuams@iastate.edu.
- For the WxChallenge
forecast contest results, we are nearing the end of the contest.
Only one forecaster was chosen for the national WxChallenge tournament,
and twenty forecasters were entered for the local tournament.
Mr. Prentice made it to Round 2 before getting beat in the national
tournament. Good job, Jayson. We now have the local tournament
final round between Jon Hobbs and Benjamin Schwedler. Good luck
to the both of you!
Past President Hobbs
- For the Iowa forecast
contest results, we just finished Marshalltown and Fort Dodge.
The NWS won those rounds, followed by Jayson Prentice. Chris Shaffer
is leading overall. We have Finals Week off from forecasting,
but we will be forecasting into the summer. If you are still interested,
please contact Mr. Hobbs at jonhobbs@iastate.edu.
Cy.s Eyes on the Skies
- Tomorrow, 22 April,
2009, we will be having our last show for Cy.s Eyes on the Skies.
We will also be having our 2009-2010 Co-Producers election after the
show. We have seven people nominated for the Co-Producer positions.
Webmaster
- We will be having
an Advanced Radar Workshop coming soon. It will be a real time
case, and it will be held sometime during Dead Week. Keep an eye
on your e-mails, and check the forums for a date and time for this.
You can come and issue warnings on an actual case that happened in the
past. Come and put your radar/forecasting skills to the test.
Historian Witter
- The new and improved
ISU AMS Brochure is complete, and it was shown. If you have any
suggestions, please e-mail Ms. Witter at historian.isuams@iastate.edu.
It looks absolutely wonderful!
- We had an .A Year
in Review. video shown to the chapter. It featured photos from
the 2008-2009 school year, and the video was great! Good memories
of the people we got to know throughout the year.
Outreach Chair Rabideau
- We have the Fellows
Science Night coming up on Thursday, 23 April from 5:30-8 PM.
A sign-up sheet went around the room. We will meet in Agronomy
at 4:45 PM. If you are interested, please come and help out, even
if you can.t be there the whole time.
- Ms. Rabideau gave
us an update on the calendars. The photos on the website will
be in the calendar next year since nobody objected to those photos.
The calendars are getting ready for a final print template. Thank
you to everyone who helped out with the calendars.
- Ms. Rabideau also
spoke about an Iowa Cub Scout weather discussion that will be held this
summer on 26 June, 2009. Those people that will be here for the
summer are encouraged to help out.
