Meeting Minutes
30 September,
2008
President Schwedler called
the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. He welcomed all present to the
meeting.
President Schwedler
- We will be adding
a .Weather Section. to the Iowa State Daily newspaper. It
will be located on the 2nd page. We met with a design
editor, and we are awaiting a starting date. We will have three-day
graphics, today.s high and low, etc. We might also include a
.Today in Weather History. section. Leaders of the forecast
team will be Jayson Prentice and Ryan Alliss.
- A StormReady update:
last Friday, a few of us met with Dave Bunker of the Department of Residence
for making the dorms more safety-minded. We are wishing to find
and identify areas to put .storm shelter. signs. We will need
some manpower to do this. These signs will be put under some plexi-glass
so they won.t be stolen. We will also talk about educating the
CA.s about what to do if there is a tornado warning. If you
didn.t sign up for this, shoot President Schwedler an email to get
involved.
- On Friday, 24 October,
Stephanie Wells is coming to campus, as part of a distinguished alumni
honor. She is the first graduate from Iowa State Meteorology.
She will be on campus, visiting WISE (Women in Science and Engineering),
and we would like to set up a time to meet and talk with her.
The proposed time to meet her is 4 PM. There was a vote put up
for a time, and 4 PM passed. A biography will be sent out soon.
Vice President Deppe
- Mr. Deppe spoke
about the ISU Meteorology clothing orders. Orders are due on 10
October. Orders can be put in the AMS mailbox in room 3010 (the
office next to the map room), or you can give your order to one of the
officers. Please, get it in right away. If you wish to pay
by check, please make the check out to .ISU AMS.. We also
have window clings, which are 5 dollars each. They are great for
your car!
- There will be a
snowfall forecast contest. Take a guess on when the first inch
of snow in Ames will be. Only one person per day will be accepted.
If you win, you.ll receive a cool prize. Just sign your name
on ONE day only. The deadline is 10 October.
Treasurer Karsten
- The last day to
turn in AMS dues will be 10 October at 4:00 p.m. Checks should
be written to .ISU AMS,. in Agronomy 3010.
- The final day to
hand in the bank statement to get reimbursed for the NWA conference
is 1 October at 4 p.m.
- We have prices determined
for the station on the roof. We will wait till after the calendar
sales to determine what we will get.
- Regarding the ISU
AMS apparel, a motion was passed. In order to get the apparel,
you MUST have your money in by 10 October.
Social Chair Hoffman
- Mr. Hoffman thanked
everyone for coming to the Student/Faculty dinner, and the Bonfire.
- Mr. Hoffman will
keep you updated on the times and dates for intramurals. Fees
are five dollars per person for broomball, and $3.75 for curling.
- Our annual Video
Game Night will be held on 17 October. Come and hang out with
your fellow meteorology majors, and enjoy some Nintendo Wii, XBOX 360,
and PS3.
- The Corn Maze event
will be held on 24 October. Come and see if you can make it out!
- We will tour the
ISU Tornado Simulator. This will be held on 16 October at (tentatively)
2:30PM. The tour will last roughly an hour.
- Watch your emails
for dates/times for these events.
Academic Chair Prentice
- Mr. Prentice showed
where you can find the class leaders and classmates on the class lists.
You can view these at www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams, under .Member Resources. and
.Classmates.. Contact your class leader for a date and time
to meet for a study session. Let them know when the next test
is. Use the forums for additional help on classes.
- WxChallenge started
yesterday. Be sure to forecast. We compete as a team, so
help your fellow ISU AMS members.
- Jon Hobbs spoke
about the Iowa Forecast Contest. We are currently doing Sioux
City, IA. Brandon Engleson won Ottumwa, IA, our last forecast
location. Contact Mr. Hobbs if you would like to get involved
in the Local contest (jonhobbs@iastate.edu).
Webmaster Mair
- Be sure to sign
up on the forums. If you don.t pay your dues by 10 October,
you will be taken off the ISU AMS email list.
Historian Witter
- If you have any
photos, please send those to Ms. Witter. You can also upload them
on the ISU AMS website at www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/Photos. Keep on taking photos!
Cy.s Eyes on the Skies
- Things are going
well. Shows have been going well. If you wish to get involved,
sign up on the forums. Ask for help on the graphics if you need
them. Shows start at 6:30 p.m., in Studio B of the Communications
Building.
Outreach Chair Rabideau
- Photos for the weather
calendar should be in by 10 October. Send your photos to her at outreach.isuams@iastate.edu, or post them on the Photo Albums
on the forums. Put the description of where the photos were taken.
- The calendar committee
needs to meet sometime to determine which photos will be finalized and
put onto the calendar. Tell Ms. Rabideau if you want to get involved.
Closing remarks
- President Schwedler
thanked all present for attending. The meeting was adjourned at
7:50 p.m.
- The chapter will
next meet on Thursday, 30 October, 2008. Bring your best costumes!
It will be Halloween! There will be a contest, and there will
be a prize for the winner.
- Once again, on
10 October, ISU AMS dues, clothing dues, photos for the calendar, and
the snowfall contest dates are due on this day.
