ISU AMS Meeting Minutes
http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/ams/
February 07, 2006

Cy's Eyes
If you have any questions about the show or how it works, just ask Janet. We need more people to participate on- and off-camera! Even if you can't come every Monday and Wednesday, please come when you can.

NCWFC
Fairbanks, Alaska is the current city. This is a difficult city to forecast for. The reporting station is just north of the river that runs through Fairbanks – and the city itself lies in a bowl north of the tallest mountains in North America. This tends to create some tricky forecasting – stagnant weather, very warm downslope winds, and so forth.
Sites to visit for the Fairbanks round include <www.arh.noaa.gov> and <pafc.arh.noaa.gov/model.php>
You can also talk to Morgan Brown (mebrown [at] iastate [dot] edu) if you have any Alaska forecasting questions.

Intramurals
We have three teams for intramural bowling, which will be held February 23 at 6:15 p.m. at the Memorial Union.
Table tennis doubles, racquetball doubles, slow-pitch softball are all coming up. Talk with Colin (orasky [at] iastate [dot] edu) if you want to know about intramural sign-ups and watch your emails for more details.

Spring Break Trip
This year's trip will be to Boulder, Colorado. The length of the trip depends on what activities people want to participate in.
ISU's spring break is from Saturday, March 11 through Sunday, March 19. The length of this trip will be shorter, probably Sunday through Thursday of that week.
Email Colin if you are interested in going.

Advanced Spotter Training
Rod Donavon will conduct advanced an spotter training on March 8 at 8 p.m. in Agronomy 2050.

NWS Visit
Probably will be held a week or two after spring break.

Treasurer's Update
The current balance is $1376, but will go down to around $1200 after reimbursing Janet for NCWFC money.

Weathernews Forecast Contest
New forecast contest, similar to NCWFC, but done by Weathernews and University of Oklahoma.
Cash scholarship will be awarded to the winner at the end of each semester.
Contest officially begins Fall 2006 semester. A beta test begins this Monday (February 13); visit the contest website at <www.wxchallenge.com>.

Minnesota Trip
Visit the Northwest Airlines meteorology department, Science Museum (which includes a Science on a Sphere), River Forecast Center, and perhaps Meteorologix.
If you are interested in going, contact Janet (thatsme [at] iastate [dot] edu).
Will likely be held in late March or early April.

KaleidoQuiz
26-hour trivia contest put on by KURE.
Starts March 3 at 4 p.m. with a new trivia question, scavenger hunt, or in-studio challenge every five minutes.
We need at least ten people to make our team be effective. If you'd like to help with KQ, talk to Janet.

AMS Exercise Group
7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Lied Rec.
Meet at the track upstairs.

Historian Notes
If you have AMS-related photos, send them to Geoff (grgforce [at] iastate [dot] edu).
Geoff is working on the meteorology board game. If you have any ideas, email him!

10th Annual Severe Storms and Doppler Radar Conference
Held at the West Des Moines Marriott from Thursday, March 23 through Saturday, March 25.
Registration is due by March 10th – www.iowa-nwa.com with credit card or check (which you would give to Elise).
Rides and hotel rooms will be set up once we know who is attending.
Jessica Reese's family will once again host a dinner for the ISU AMS on March 23. Email her (jreese [at] iastate [dot] edu) if you plan to join in.
2nd Annual Alumni Luncheon will be held at the conference. Turn in your $12 and sign-up form to Darlene in the Meteorology office (next to the Map Room) by March 15.
Watch your emails for further information.

Severe Weather Talks
School talks and science nights are fast approaching.
There are two science nights on Thursday, April 6. We will need to have people attending both events if one of the dates doesn't change.
A student teacher in Ames would like to bring a group of about 15 3rd and 4th grades from Ames Christian School to tour the meteorology department and perhaps the television studio. At this time, it appears this will be on Thursday, March 30, 1-2 p.m. More information will be available next meeting and by email.
If anybody wants to look into creating a new tornado machine, talk to Elise.

Upcoming Events
