  • Tracking of Large-scale Motion to Verify Rossby Wave Theory
  • Abstract:
  • This work was motivated by the group's curiosity to explore the processes and relationships that drive large scale wave motion across the globe. This report includes observations of wave propagation and growth in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, along with a zonal jet evaluation in both hemispheres from 5 September 2011 to 11 November 2011. The data recorded included wave number, wave amplitude, wave speed, 150-300mb zonal winds maximum, and 500mb zonal winds maximum. Also included is an evaluation of Rossby wave theory and the relationship of wave growth and both zonal jets. The results indicated that Rossby wave theory did not statistically agree with the recorded data. The group found that the data did not support the theory that wave speed increases as wave number decreases or the theory that larger waves have greater amplitudes than smaller waves.
