Profesional Goals Statemet

A professional goal in the degree program of Meteorology and Environmental Studies is to attain a career in the private sector of Meteorology as an operational forecaster and/or communicating important weather information for the clients of the company I would work for. In particular, working within the wind energy sector of operational forecasting is the most desirable position due to my background in wind energy and undergraduate research at Iowa State through the Crop Wind Energy Experiment in 2011-2013. Another path to my professional goal is going to graduate school to continue my research in wind energy.

Educational Goals statement

While taking all my required courses at Iowa State in pursuit of my Bachelors Degree in Meteorology and Environmental Studies, I am confident that each course will help strengthen my knowledge in my field of study and abroad. With this knowledge, I will be able to utilize it in my career endeavors that are set in my Professional Goals statement. The electives I have taken that do not involve Meteorology or Environmental Studies will allow me to gain a new perspective of broader subjects that could be essential when talking to colleagues that come from different educational backgrounds. The core classes in both my majors have already encouraged me to apply that information in everyday life such as my research job through the Meteorology Department, forecast contests like WxChallenge, and my Senior Thesis research project that won 2nd place in Fall 2013.

About Me

Hello,
My name is Jimmy Cayer, and I am currently enrolled as a Senior undergraduate student at Iowa State University working on my Bachelors degree in Meteorology and Environmental Studies. I am previously from Wilmington, Delaware, and decided to move to Iowa because of Iowa State's outstanding Meteorology program. While living at Iowa State, there are a number of activities that I enjoy doing besides just schoolwork. Some of them include playing guitar, disc golfing, biking, rock climbing, and watching sports. Not surprisingly, one of my favorite hobbies is looking at the weather everyday through models, surface analysis, and upper air soundings. Weather is a phenomenon that effects people each day, and it is important to stay up to date on past, current, and future weather events that occur. Without meteorologists to stay up to date on these things, no one would be prepared for tomorrow.
