Self-sustaining mechanism (Figure 5.21) :

- the overtaking air from behind the squall line is relatively dry:

- precipitation falling into the dry air evaporates

- the evaporation cools the air to the wet-bulb temperature and sinks due to this cooling (strengthens the downdraft)
