Chapter 5.3.1 Squall Lines (Line of Thunderstorms)

• Self-sustaining mechanism (Figure 5.21) :

  • the overtaking air from behind the squall line is relatively dry:
    • precipitation falling into the dry air evaporates
    • the evaporation cools the air to the wet-bulb temperature and sinks due to this cooling (strengthens the downdraft)
