My professional goals are highly reflective of my educational goals. With several private weathe companies that have been emerging in the last several years, there is an expanding marketplace for prospective meteorologists. However, there is also an abundance of competition. Companies are looking for meteorologists with their own unique style to bring to the workplace. Getting a degree is only the beggining. One must distinguish themselves from other prospective graduates in order to receive the job that has been posted. This is one of my main professional goals I wish to achieve before leaving Iowa State University. I hope to take forecasting abilities, some additional computer knowledge, good customer service, and an abilitity to communicate with people, and wrap this into one nice package that I can present to an employer. Working at Hy-Vee food stores since I was a sophmore in high school has adapted me to dealing with the general public. however, working at a grocery store has also helped me build up my communication and business skills, even if it's just a grocery store. I hope to take this with me when I leave Iowa State University. A specific career is still a bit fuzy at this point. I am looking towards the private sector for opportunities. The National Weather Service is a wonderful place to work, but I want to distinguish my self and find a career that is reflective of myself and what I love to do. The economy of the 21st century is proving to be a very volatile one. One small change in the weather can trigger a chain of events that lead to millions of dollars lost for major industries. This is a major interest of mine involving meteorology. I hope to bring this passion of the weather with me to the marketplace, improving the accuracy of private weather forecasts, hopefully saving major industries from loss to severe weather.
