Supervisor/Instructor: Dr. Xiaoqing Wu Credits: Usually 1 per semester up to a total of 3 during ISU career. If internship involves more than 20 hours or so of work per week, 2 credits can be assigned (must meet with Dr. Wu to determine this before internship begins) Semesters offered: All. Students who do summer internships often request that the credit be applied in fall semester so they are not forced to pay tuition in summer. Class DescriptionMany students at ISU do an internship before they graduate, and this can be extremely important for getting a job in your chosen field. For instance, some students have felt that interning at the National Weather Service was the primary reason they later were hired by the National Weather Service. Students getting broadcast meteorology jobs have mentioned that it was essential to do an internship at a TV station, preferably during their last semester, so that they could use the facilities to make demo tapes to send to potential employers. How to get an internshipIt is generally the student's responsibility to find an internship by contacting places like TV stations, NWS offices, the DNR, or other government labs. If employers contact Dr. Wu seeking interns, he will send announcements out to students. How to get creditStudents must contact Dr. Wu and arrange the internship with him (room 3011 Agronomy, 294-9872, wuxq@iastate.edu). During the meeting, the number of credits will be determined. Before the end of the internship, students must send a report to Dr. Wu (email preferred) describing what they did, what they liked, what they wish was different, and any other thoughts. Their supervisor must do a similar report. The course grade, either pass or fail, is based on these reports arriving before grades are due.
