Here is an example of thickening cirrus clouds, indicating the presence of an
approaching warm front:
This is a picture looking towards the west. The criss-cross pattern of cirrus
streaks is commonly seen before an approaching
warm front.
The cirrus streaks aligned
in a southwest to northeastward direction are indicative of the advancing
warmer air at higher levels, while the thickening of cirrostratus clouds to the
west (as the sun is no longer clearly visible), signify the approach of a change
in weather ahead.
With the progression of time, these clouds will likely thicken into
altostratus and eventually into the lower and more dense
nimbostratus,
as the advancing storm gets closer and closer.
