Three stages in an Air-Mass Thunderstorm
- Cumulus stage consists of a warm buoyant plume, strong updraft velocities (~10 m/s near the top of the cloud), supercooled water droplets

- Mature stage consists of a downdraft region where the region of heaviest rain occurs. The downdraft can be enhanced by “dry entrainment” and evaporation of precipitation. Maximum vertical velocities are in the middle portion of cloud with detrainment of air above that.
