ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE PROGRAM

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Thank you for your interest in Iowa State University

We recognize the time and expense students must invest when they decide to apply for graduate study at a foreign university, and we would like to assist prospective students in deciding whether to apply at Iowa State. The Atmospheric Science Program has a limited number of openings each year for qualified graduate students. The number of applicants far exceeds the number the department can admit. Below you will find information on the minimum academic qualifications required by the Atmospheric Science Program for serious consideration of your application. Applicants with records that meet or exceed these guidelines are not guaranteed admission. Admission of qualified applicants also depends on a match between the student's area of interest and the research specialties and needs of the faculty.

General requirements for admission

Information for Applicants from China, India, and Taiwan

Because of the large number of applications received from China, India, and Taiwan, specific minimum guidelines for applicants from those countries are given below:

China: A four-year bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 80% or higher.

India: A four-year bachelor's degree or a master's degree with a First Division degree classification.

Taiwan: A four-year bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade average of 75% or higher or 3.0 based on the 4.0 scale.

Additional Requirements

In addition to satisfying the application requirements, an applicant will be admitted only if a faculty member in the Atmospheric Science Program agrees to work with the applicant as major professor. This selection process takes place after a student has applied for admission and a complete file is made available for review by our faculty. This matching procedure permits us to manage enrollment and ensures the accepted student of having a major professor. It does not imply an offer of financial support to the applicant.

Information on Assistantships

Assistantships can be offered by individual faculty members in the department who are responsible for a grant or a contract. Such assistantship offers to entering students tend to be quite limited and are made only after a faculty member has agreed to serve as the applicant's major professor.
